- Diameter / DIA:
The DIA value is the abbreviation for the diameter of your contact lenses. It is specified in millimeters. With 14.0 to 14.5, soft contact lenses have a larger diameter than hard contact lenses, which have only a diameter of 9.0 to 10.0. Most soft contact lenses are exclusively produced with a single DIA value. For this reason, it can often not be changed.
- Water content:
The water content of a contact lens specifies the proportion of water contained in the lens. The water content has an effect on the lenses' permeability to oxygen and on the moisture balance of the eye. Lenses with low water content are particularly well suited for dry eyes. They draw less moisture from the eye thus preventing the eye from becoming dry and maintaining a comfortable wearing feel for a longer period of time. Lenses with high water content are softer and therefore more comfortable in the eye in the first moments and they are more permeable to oxygen since the oxygen is better transferred to the eye by the water molecules. (Silicone-hydrogel lenses are even more permeable to oxygen.)

UV protection in contact lenses filters the rays of the sun entering the pupil. The contact lenses only protect a small area of the cornea because they are placed directly in front of the pupil. Contact lenses, even with UV protection, cannot replace sunglasses because the conjunctiva is still unprotected.

The permeability to oxygen is specified by the DK value. The cornea of the eye must constantly be supplied with oxygen. If it does not receive it through the air, small blood vessels develop around the iris to ensure the oxygen supply through the blood. In order to prevent this from happening, it is important to wear contact lenses with high DK values. Most older products have a DK value below 30. These lenses should not be worn longer than 6-8 hours at a time. Newer products, the so-called silicone-hydrogel lenses have DK values of over 100 and can sometimes be worn continuously for up to 30 days and nights.

Contact lenses are produced with different usage times. These vary from daily disposable lenses to lenses for several years. The most popular contact lenses are daily disposable lenses and monthly disposable lenses. Daily disposable lenses are particularly suitable for people who do not wear the lenses on a daily basis, e.g. only when exercising, for people with very sensitive eyes since a new lens, clean is put in each morning or for vacations. Monthly disposable lenses are soft contact lenses which are replaced on a monthly basis. The designation refers to the time from opening the blister package and the first time the lenses are worn to the time they are disposed of.

The handling tint is a slight bluish circular tint of the lens which helps with the putting them in. The lens more clearly sets off against the environment and can thus be seen better. The color of the eyes is not changed by the tint.

Contact lenses aren't just worn to correct poor eyesight, they can also be used for cosmetic purposes, e.g. coloured lenses. Another type of contact lenses are occlusive lenses, which are worn after an eye operation to protect the cornea. These lenses are made with a dioptre value of 0.00 dpt (plan).

Due to different product characteristics, contact lenses are suitable for a wide range of people. Some contact lenses, for example, are especially suitable for people with dry eyes. There are also contact lenses for people who spend a lot of time in front of a computer screen, or work near an air conditioning unit or in a dusty environment. The amount of time the lenses can be worn for is also dependent on the material properties.
